Hello there! Welcome to our Decolonial Data: Vietnamese Historical Narratives (DH 187) capstone project. With this story, we aim to tell the story of how French colonialism influenced the simplicities of fashion and food and how these influences can be portrayed through a simulation of personal accounts, while emphasizing generational differences that Vietnamese families/diaspora face. A mom and her daughter are in their home in Hanoi.
Daughter enters the room.
Daughter: Mom! I saw my friends wearing new clothes that are really pretty. Can we go shopping?
Mom: Okay, daughter. [[Shopping|shopping]] or [[food]] first?

(set: $shopping to 0)Mom: //Modern and tailored clothing is so much easier to get in the city. I'm so glad I am able to provide new clothing for my daughter now that our family has the money to. My parents were not able to buy me new clothing when we lived in the countryside.//
Mom and Daughter arrive at the shops.
Mom: //Wow, all of the colors are so much brighter, must be the new style.// Alright, should we look at the [[pants]] first?

Daughter: I'm so hungry, I'm excited for food! There's this new place down the road that we could go to.
Mom: What do they have?
Daughter: There's this new type of sandwich that's French inspired and they also sell coffee too! I heard it's supposed to be really strong and that's just what I need.
After finishing their food, the duo leaves the restaurant.

Mom: How about these black trousers? They won't get dirty easily and they go with everything.
Daughter: Mom, no! Those are so out of style! White trousers are much more popular and fashionable now. There's different types of white trousers too.
Mom: //Hmm, I used to have something like those that were looser around the leg, are those popular here too?// Do you like the ones that are looser overall or tighter and flared at the bottom? I used to have the looser ones.
Daughter: I like the ones with the flared bottoms, they're much more flattering and everyone wears those now too.
Mom: //I guess those would be more adaptable to the hot weather we've been having.//
Daughter: Let's go see the [[shirts]] now!

Mom: Where did the collar go on these tunics?
Daughter: These necklines are so nice! There are so many options to choose from.
Mom: //I suppose there isn't a need for a collar in this hot climate. What an interesting change.//There are definitely many more options than I had when I was young.

Daughter: The sleeves are so puffy! I haven't seen you in these Mom.
Mom: You're right. I am much more used to a tighter sleeve.
Daughter: Look! There's a button at the cuff. I love the different styles of button and unbottoning the sleeve.
Mom: //That would be useful for different weathers.// That seems nice and useful.

Mom: It seems like there is a four-panel and five-panel tunic. I used to have the four-panel tunic when I was young.

Daughter: All my friends have the five-panel tunic now. I'll try the five-panel.

Daughter goes to try on her new clothes, but comes out in her original clothing.
Daughter: Mom, I think I need different undergarments. My yếm doesn't work with this tunic.
Mom: Oh no, let me see if they have any [[yếm]] in the shop. Mom goes to the undergarment section.

Mom://Wow these yếm are different. They no longer have the halter straps and instead they have two straps. That must be more comforable for my daughter's neck. Let me bring her these ones.//
Mom goes back to Daughter and hands her the yếm.
Mom: Here, [[try|tryon2]] these and see if they fit better. Daughter: Okay I'm done! What do you think Mom?
Mom: //Why is the bodice so tight on her? It makes her chest look big and improper.// Where do you get these ideas for clothing?
Daughter walks over to the magazine on table and flips through it.

Daughter: Oh it's in this magazine. It's a guide to how to choose different styles and personalized colors to look prettier. There are also recommended exercises that are popular too because they help you achieve the Western look.
Mom: //What? Western ideals are not modest. My mom would be disappointed if I were to be sexualized for wearing that.//
Mom and Daughter look in the [[mirror]] together.
Side-by-side, Mom notices the differences in her and her daughter.
Mom: //Wow my daughter has grown up so differently than I did. Our clothes are so different, and even our hair parts are different. My middle part looks aged compared to my daughter's side part. Times really have changed. I remember when this shop had more than just clothing but now that products are more accessible, it seems like the owners can afford to focus on one type of product.//
Mom: Do you feel pretty daughter?
Daughter: I feel so pretty Mom! I hope boys notice me.
Mom: //I'm glad she has the ability to embrace these new times. Even though I am worried about her being sexualized by men, I hope that these new choices allow her to be a good future wife and mother.// Then we'll buy the clothes. Go change and we can (if: $food is 0)[go eat [[food]] or ][[go home|home]].Content with the full day, they head back home while the mother tells her daughter about the clothes she had when she was her daughter's age.
